International Lawyers to Make a Fortune on Kenyan ICC Cases

According to local newspaper reports, international lawyers are getting ready to make a fortune from six Kenyans accused by the International Criminal Court (ICC) of engineering the 2008 post election tribal clashes. Figures released show that lawyers will earn many times more than Shs 80,000 ($1,000) per day as costs for defending a case, in addition to accommodation costs estimated at between shs11,336 and Shs 28,600 per day.

Since the International Criminal Court (ICC) decided it would take up investigation on the 2008 post election violence case following an outcry for justice from Kenyans, top officials and politicians in President Mwai Kibaki’s Party for National Unity (PNU) have been uncomfortable. They have so far tried every trick known to them to block the work of the international body.

Those of us, who believe that a good constitution emanates from and stays in the hearts of men and women are not surprised that Kenya’s President Mwai Kibaki squandered the goodwill, accorded him by the world community by clandestinely inviting Sudanese President Omar Al Bashir to the new Kenya Constitution Promulgation Ceremony on Friday.
