Kenya’s corruption-ridden workers pension fund, National Social Security Fund, has paid the Lugari member of parliament Mr Cyrus Jirongo Sh490 million and Sh342million to a Ugandan businessman who owned Mugoya Construction and Engineering Company, in a controversial out-of-court settlement.

The power and wealth of Mr. Samuel Gichuru, the retired long serving boss of Kenya’s sole electricity supplier, Kenya Power and Lighting Company, and one of the Kenyans wanted by a court in the Britain over fraud and money laundering charges, was felt everywhere. On a visit to downtown Nairobi Electricity House to greet and laugh with a former classmate and friend of mine, my friend warned me before hand not to “laugh like an African” otherwise “the boss will be upset.” “That’s bad for me, you know!”
China and Land Buying: Why Africans Should Start Worrying

With leaders such we have in Africa, there is much reason to fear the expansion of China into the region. Political and human rights violations aside, there is a serious possibility of disruption of life, food production and cultural patterns when the Chinese start getting into land buying as they are doing in Brazil.
According to the New York Times, the Chinese are acquiring large tracks of land – enough to scare the Brazilians – to plant soya beans. The report says, “A new railroad line (built by the Chinese) in Uruaçu, Brazil, will carry soybeans to a port for shipping to China.” It continues, “Officials in this farming area would not sell the hundreds of thousands of acres needed. Undeterred, the Chinese pursued a different strategy: providing credit to farmers and potentially tripling the soybeans grown here to feed chickens and hogs back in China.

As you have noticed, I am not very much impressed by Chinese entry into Africa for two reasons. Number One is that its goods, though cheap, are substandard. You may say: What’s wrong with cheap substandard goods? You save money. And that is true.
