In its report, Doing Business in Kenya 2010, the World Bank ranks Narok the best town to do business in Kenya. In the study which measured business regulations in 11 Kenya towns – Narok, Eldoret, Garissa, Isiolo, Kilifi, Kisumu, Malaba, Mombasa, Nairobi, Nyeri and Thika – Narok emerged the top.

A report by World Bank and African Development Bank says savings and credit cooperatives are among the best channels for Diaspora money transfer in Africa.
The widely publicized report, Leveraging Migration for Africa: Remittances, Skills and Investments, says that use of savings and credit cooperatives as channels for diaspora remittances can “reduce costs of money transfers by increasing access to financial services in the rural areas and poor communities and reducing the costs of opening bank accounts.”

The Machakos District Cooperative Union was dying with heavy debts when Mr. Patrick Katingima took over as the chairman in 1991.
Its most important income generating section, the banking division, had just collapsed and been closed down. The cotton industry had collapsed due to sudden liberalization which made farmers unable to repay their loans from the union and the government had scrapped the statutory 2.5 per cent of total sales contributions made to it by its members.
