On Sunday of February 12, 2012, I stopped at a shoeshine boy’s at Machakos town were the so-called G-7 alliance of Eldoret North MP William Ruto, Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and several others were camped in a rally to push their presidential campaign. The town was abuzz with stories of how much cash people were being given to attend the rally.

Kenyans have complained about President Mwai Kibaki’s inability to listen and take account of the public sentiment. To President Kibaki and his supporters, this frowning on Kenyans may appear as strength of character. But now it is threatening the careers (and lives) of his closes allies – Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and the Head of Public Service Francis Muthaura. And even worse, it is threatening suck Mr. Kibaki himself into the fire.

It is heartening to hear that Kenyans are now turning to coffee drinking. According to the Chinese news agency Xinhua, Kenyans are opening up coffee selling cafes all over the city of Nairobi. “A walk on the streets of the capital Nairobi reveals that coffee drinking is turning out to be big business for investors as coffee shops aggressively compete for customers.”

There is much to be said in praise of those like MP for Ndaragwa Mr. Jeremiah Kioni, who want to have the senate scrapped from the constitution. The function of the senator is obvious superfluous It is also true, a senate would be best suited to federal system of government, for which we argued, but were defeated. But since we were told the constitution would not be cast in stone, maybe its time for all those of us who had different view points to bring them out.
